Early Morning Forest Love
This morning my love and I awoke at 6:30 am. This, for those of you who know me personally, is very rare. But the only time we could trek into the NW forest together is early, before he goes to work.We dressed in our coziest sweaters and pants, boots and hats, and drove 40 minutes up a mountain into the heart of the Gorge. I knew all this rain would bring an abundance of forest fruit, and so with my excitement building, we parked and headed into the damp conifer forest. Paper bag in hand, knife in hand, we eyed the wet, mossy, perfumed forest.
but as my good friend Erin the night before had said, many people probably already hit up the good spots.
we saw clusters of chopped off chanterelle stumps. But deeper into the forest we hit a jackpot.
On Monday we are having my friend Tracey Forrest over for wild mushroom dinner.
I will post pictures from it!

CUSTOM embroidery on your item or mine

I began my venture into job description: "clothing designer" by taking vintage apparel and embroidering whimsical drawings on them.
That line, called Bonnie Heart Clyde, has taken a long hiatus, but I am now taking custom embroidery orders. You can either bring me a loved item, a vintage item, or a blank garment that you would like embroidered.

The Last Splash!

Above are some backstage shots of the fashion event that took place yesterday at Penninsula Park. Submissions for experimental swimwear were made by a few of Portland's talented artists and designers. Many thanks to Tiffany (shown above in aqua), Curtis and Fox for modeling my clothes so so well. Everyone looked amazing!! The Last Splash was smash.

BlueBerry Boy Bait
No, it is not the name of a new dress style, but of a scrumptious gift our fellow 811 building resident, Tamara of Redux, brought to us this afternoon. She said it hasn't been successful in attracting men, but in making her gaggle of girlfriends happy!
Yum! thanks Tamara!

Jordan Domont in September

"David Lynch" by Jordan Domont
A bio from his website:
Jordan Domont hails from the corn-fringed and cul-desac’d suburbs of Indiana. He grew up tall and earned a BFA from the University of Oregon in Eugene, where he studied figurative painting. It was there that he fell skull over-sneakers for portraiture. After college, he moved to Portland, where he now lives and paints.
To infuse depth and luminosity into his work, Jordan employs a palette of punchy hues. Experimenting, he discovered that when inks layer heavily onto Mylar, it creates a rich, almost melted effect. Pigments become slightly volatile, even mercurial, and their behavior enlivens the entire process. Jordan likes to explore how different amalgams of color work together, because it sure trumps sitting back and watching paint dry.
Clients Include: New York Magazine, Business Week, Dallas Observor, Atlanta Magazine, Eye Weekly, Virgin/Atlantic, The Scientist, UCLA Magazine, Inside Counsel, Time-Out Chicago, VICE, Portland Mercury, Seattle Weekly, Chicago Magazine, MBA Jungle, Westchester Magazine, Toronto Life Magazine, Las Vegas City Life, and HOW Magazine.
It sure will be a colorful party!see more of his work here.

Treehugger Write UP!!

I had a lovely conversation today with Amy Dufault who writes for Eco Salon and does some freelance repping for a fantastic group of eco-designers, and she mentioned that someone was going to contact me today about a writeup of the Emily Katz line. Well, I guess they had enough information, because no one got in touch, but they did say some nice things.
Read it here.

SO, I was one of the many to stand in Pioneer Square last night waiting for Dave Chappelle. It was a bonafide adventure unlike anything I had seen for a long while.
more info here
I was almost hoping it had been some kind of crazy marketing scheme, but then again, I wasn't thinking at the time and should have piped in as well:
"Dave Chappelle stopped in Second Nature today and bought himself an embroidered tie. He said he would wear it in the square tonight!"

curtains are going up!
.
Very excited, that I somehow managed to escape that place having spent only $35 (my cart was much more full, but one of the workers walked away with my treasures to restock them, thinking I had abandoned them, within 5 minutes, so I had the excuse to think that I probably didn't need all of that...) I headed back to the shop ready to install.
One thing you need to know about Ikea is that those Swedes are smarter than you. Really. I think of myself as a pretty handy and intuitive person, but the simplest directions evade me. So, I tried to screw in the male part into the female part. And it was not working! Come on, this screwing thing is so elementary...
In a huff I brought it back to the store, to exchange it for a functioning pair, and the clerk tells me that it isn't broken, just totally backwards. UGGGH.
Ah well. Now !!!!! The curtains are going up!

Betsy Walton
Yesterday, the lovely artist Betsy Walton came into the shop. We are doing a trade: a painting of hers for a few things of mine.
It is always inspiring to talk with other artists/designers about their process and what new projects they are working on! And her work is so mystical and beautiful! I can't wait to have one of her original paintings in my life.

All The Mountains is one I have been obsessively checking.
She has introduced me to many artists, designers, and beautiful things over the past weeks, I don't know what I did without her.

Leanne Marshall

Eco Designer Leanne Marshall finally debuted her first full collection since appearing on Project Runway, and I must say it has all her style, but I am not in love with the color palate.
Of course she has to appeal to a much wider audience, and Bluefly surely has a little bit of a hand in it...
Leanne and I shared the runway at Portland Fashion week, just 2 years ago and it is so interesting to see how many different directions peoples lives can go...
you can follow her at her blog here.

Emily Katz Featured on Urban Weeds

So, I was working at Moxie RX, making smoothies, and these two adorable girls came by and asked if they could take my picture. Turns out, they are from a sweet online streetstyle blog called Urban Weeds, I dragged these pics over from their blog...hope that's ok!

Embroidered Artwork

This month I have two art show up. The first is a group show at Columbus Ohio's modern Mahan Gallery. You can view the show, titled "Stay Calm" on their website. These works are all new and part of a series that is buzzing in my head.
I also have a selection of embroidered items from my line Bonnie Heart Clyde up there as well. They are going fast!

The other show is a solo show at the lovely local lingerie boutique Lille.
These embroideries are all in hoops and are of animals cuddling with people...so cuddly.
All of the embroidered work is done freeform on an old sewing machine.
please contact me if you would like more info on the embroidered works.

The best things happen unexpectedly, when you aren't looking for them. Like new love, or discovering a favorite band, or finding that little necklace you had forgotten, hidden beneath your dresser.
Second Nature is a shop that was born in a similarly magical way.
Acting as the main showroom of Portland based designers Heather Treadway (of paperdoll fashion), and Emily Katz, who met through friends and poof!! a shop/studio was born... The storefront will host 1st friday gallery openings, connecting fiber and art to the greater community, as well as trunkshows of our favorite local and national designers.

please keep your eyes open for more info as it comes,
we are now open most days, and will have our grand opening party on 1st Friday August 7th.
please come join us!!
